I love handwritten things. I like writing down notes. I like – actually, no – love good pens and a good notebook. I love good penmanship. I love brush-lettering and such. Recently, I’ve been trying to get myself into the art of calligraphy.
I first tried calligraphy when my mom came home from a workshop (Calligraphy is her obsession. Go talk to her about it! Hehe!) and let me try her new toys. After that, we both joined another workshop together, one by Alessa Lanot of Life After Breakfast. As much as I loved writing words and making them look pretty, I was really frustrated with the technicality of calligraphy. (Too many things to think about! Heeeelp my brain!) Since then, I’ve ignored my calligraphy materials.
As it is the start of March and summer is approaching (more like graduation and gap year!), I’m motivating myself to love calligraphy. Last Sunday, I picked up my materials and just started writing. There was no thinking about the do’s and don’ts. I just kept writing random words and phrases. My mom also got me a calligraphy practice pad and had Fozzy Dayrit of The Fozzy Book (aka ultimate calligraphy goals) write my name on it. YES TO PRETTY THINGS TO LOOK AT! YES TO MOTIVATION!
My favorite practice exercise so far to write song titles from my favorite albums. I recently practiced with Taylor Swift’s 1989 aka the best album ever. *drops mic* But really, this also gives you a chance to take a sneak peak into my music library!
Be warned: this is only the beginning. I WILL be practicing a lot. Get ready for a lot of ink-smeared fingers.
